Day 7 - Homeward Bound

05:30 and everyone is up and heading for an early breakfast. The mood is quite somber, a mixture of tiredness and disappointment that the week has gone so quickly. The cases are brought down, none of them packed like mom did! A goodbye to the hotel staff and the first coach starts it's journey to the airport. The sun is breaking over the tops of the mountains and as we move lower down in the valley the crimson caps give way to sparkling white. The roller coaster ride down the valley churns a few stomachs, we turn a corner, a chance to look back up the valley at Les Menuires snuggled in the distance, another corner and the valley opens out with Moutieres at its base. The snow is thinning on the slopes as we pass through sleeping villages. We continue down the mountain into the morning haze, the silence only broken by the occasional call of “I feel sick”. A few final turns and churns, the coach dives into tunnel that seems to go on for miles to emerge on a motorway in the valley bottom. The snow just sits up on the distant peaks and the last week becomes a memory to be treasured.

Grenoble is a small airport and following a brief check in the group move through to departures. The second coach was delayed in leaving and so there is an anxious few minutes once it arrives for the second part of the party to clear security. The final call before closing and Miss Snowball rounds up two girls from the loo!

The flight back was pleasant and uneventful and even baggage claim and customs went without a hitch. A surprise presentation from Stacie B to Mr F from the group to say thankyou and for once in the week Mr F was lost for words.

[And so if your reading the blog now, thanks to everyone who contributed and for making the week so special. It was quite daunting to be responsible for such a large group and it was only possible through the wonderful support given to me by my team of Mrs Olsen, Miss Noble, Mr Spence, Mr Latham and of course my right hand lady, Mrs Spence].

Everyone through, all present and correct - how to break the news that only one coach has turned up for the party of 70! Did Mr Farley panic, not this close to home. A few phone calls and twenty minutes later the missing coach is found at the wrong terminal. A short delay and finally underway.

What a week, it's impossible to mention everyone individually but collectively a party to be proud of. Exceptional efforts on the skiing and snowboarding front and a credit to the school, parents and more importantly themselves. We will be arranging an apres ski trip evening once I have collected photo's and video's in and look forward to seeing you soon.

See you in school tomorrow!

Day 6 - Last man standing

Today has been absolutely manic fitting in skiing, eating, certificate presentations, return of ski hire equipment etc. and so the blog has taken backstage. It will be updated at the next opportunity although this may not be until Sunday, sorry.

Impressions of the week

For the staff the students have been exceptional. A day has not gone by without positive comments from members of the public about their manners and behaviour. The staff here have been wonderful as were the ski instructors. A special mention must go to Laura our rep who has been the best ever, nothing is too much trouble and really helped make this week special.

Apparently we are below average for the week with only 3 visits to the medical centre, one lost pair of boots and one lost set of poles, but we still have all the students and willbe bringing them back tomorrow.

Food has been exceptional throughout the week, despite what the students might say, proper food not burgers!

For the students the experience is summarized in the one comment at the end of the day....

Having just skiied down from 2800m along a quite steep red run I was skiing alongside a young man who had made quiet but exceptional progress in the week. "Have you enjoyed yourself?" I asked...

"Have I, its been the best week of my life"

Teaching goes beyond the classroom, it's about making a difference.

And every now and again they have a little fun...

Mr F, Mr L & Mrs S... but who's who? Filmed by Mr Spence

Day 5 - Is there time for another run?

Y13 won the extremely biased quiz last night to put the teachers into second place! Then the homework session to get those bits of "trad" education out the way.

Friday

Well here we go again, back on the slopes although with a few aches and pains from earlier in the week. Mrs Spence took her group up through Val Thorens while Miss Snowball's group advanced to Pointe de la Masse. Mr Farley worked with Mrs Olsen's group of Elisha B, Rebecca W, Chelsie G and Danni H on their turns. Everyone has made excellent progress throughout the week and are working towards tomorrows presentations. More photo's to follow...

Lunch was pasta with a carbonara sauce, time to take the boots off for a few minutes and then to head back to the slopes for another 2 hour lesson in the sunshine.

What... it's snowing! Yes, when we got to the top of the mountain it was snowing and much colder than the rest of the week. The light dusting was just enough to make the upper runs even better than this morning. Mr F managed to snap a few shots of three of the groups as they hurtled down the mountain. This resort is so big that once out on the slopes it is impossible to find groups. Tomorrow we are considering going out for the whole morning and having a picnic on the mountain with the whole party together..

Everyone is working so hard we have even had people asleep at the dinner table and almost falling into their lasagne.Thre value of the pound against the euro is showing, almost £3.00 for a glass of coke on the mountain and a posh hot chocolate with cream and sprinkles will set you back almost a fiver!

Rumour has it that the king of snowboarders Tom E had a right wipe out this morning. But as Mr F says "if your not falling your not learning". Mel is learning a lot I hear. I've just looked up and spotted Super Coopers team coming down the mountain, no falls and they are even following each other. In no time they are back on the chair and heading up for another run. Well it's time to head back out to the slopes to take the superkeen for an extra hour.

Miss Snowball crashed out on ice and twisted her knee, she says it's like a melon! Has it gone green or yellow we ask? Ryan R and Mike B used their bums as brakes rather than the snowboard! Steve H & Dom J went down a black run, not sure they meant to as Steve decided to try flying. Jamies H wiped his sister out and sent her 30 feet down the mountain. When you see her ask about her boots! In the jumps competition Ade T was the only one to land cleanly although Mr L said it lacked "mass air", the arguement continues...

Lots of very tired people at the end of the day.

Disco Fever approached and the best frocks came out. Must admit that the 2 Andy's looked really good in theirs. It was Murder on the Dance Floor although some looked a little shocked when the other school arrived. Mrs S said it was hot and noisy, a bit like teaching 8C on a summers day!

And now one last day of skiing.

Don't worry mums we will remind them about Mothers Day at tomorrows meeting.

Day 4 - Not more sun!

Yes another glorious day, sunshine and snow. A few tired faces but everyone is getting ready to hit the slopes. Maddie D needs to ski the other side of the mountain as she only has half a tan from yesterday. Are there any budding holiday romances? Who would rather have a packet of M&M's over any of the lads? Watch the blog....

What a a morning, snow froze over night making skiing conditions extremely difficult and creating far too many spills and tumbles. Mr Farley was totally wiped out by a passing frenchman who never even stopped to apologize. This might cheer some of you up, especially those in my ICT groups. We've had a note to say that Hannah & Codie are slacking with their BTech (Sport) work! Miss Noble is on your case from here....

Madison C and Colbie are doing really well as are all the Y8's. Abbie's fishing for compliments and her feet are smelling, sorry, killing. Ade's not missing anybody, Alex D has face planted and used his nose as a brake. Ellis W looks like a match in her red helmet and has a huge grin on her face after eating a banana sideways. Just to let everyone know Jay A has fell off the button lift twice! Dan M has bailed a few times but is having a great time. Tom E won the snowboarding freestyle contest much to James D's disapprovement. Jessie L keeps getting snow down her top. Dan M is addicted to coke... he's on his third glass. Mat P's knee is better. Smitty did the same agian today, whatever that was and is having a smashing time. Mr L was doing a 360 and ended up looking like Bambi on ice. Stephen H has spent more time using his back as a sledge. Mel has gone a whole day without moaning - honest, she says her ski insructor is really nice (that's for you Pars). Sarah is flirting with her instructor, watch it Josh! The 2C's have had a few girly squabbles on the slopes. Guess which member of the crew said "where is Everest"? When told it's in China the reply was "that why we can't see it." Niall's sound and having a great time. Jaire thinks Ellis is perfect in every single way.

The story of the day…. Our first real accident! Sam, the Man, Swaffield had a fall on the slopes this morning hurting his arm. As a precaution he was taken to the medical centre where an x-ray revealed a brain. He has no excuses now for not working when back at school. During the examination they doctor also discovered a small fracture to the left forearm. This appears to be from a fall a few weeks ago and had not fully healed. The new fall caused more damage and unfortunately Sam is now in plaster but working hard on his homework. Sam wants everyone to know how hard he is walking around with a broken arm for three weeks.

Day 3 - Moving up the Mountain

Important news.... Mrs Olsen has not fallen over this morrning!

IN BRIEF

Most groups are now moving up the mountain and taking in the great views from the top. There are a few aches an pains creeping in although everyone are making great progress. Alex D and Micheal C are suffering from helmet hair, Emily has taken a fence down, Todd appeared to drop off the end of the mountain (no damage done), Hannah and Stacey R are now exceptional so they tell me. Super Cooper is skiing well and Sarah A is eating for Great Britain. Elle B still talks while skiing, Tom E has no fashion sense at lunch times - check out the black tights, and Jamie H thinks he is Heath Ledger (the Joker, not Brokeback Mountain). Eve has hit her head while in bed! Megan tells me she is the best. Olivia is cruising, Ryan is rapid, Alex tells us she has burnt parts that shouldn't see the sun in public. Jaire Bear is a magnet for other skiers. Everone wants to say hi! Amy got ploughed over by Chad, many romances started this way.

THE AFTERNOON

What a day, how we suffered! The sun, the snow, the skiing... Mr Farley was forced to ski with his group into Val Thorens down a black run, but the team were more than enough for the challenge. Mrs Olsen's special group made great progress coming down from the top of the mountain. The beginners groups are storming the blue runs and challenging the reds. The intermediates are carving down the pistes while the advanced group are banking their ski miles..
Mrs Spence continues to star on the slopes, Mr Latham is looking quite professional and Miss Snowball is living up to her name.

This evening there have been some great comments from other guests staying at the hotel about how well mannered and polite our students are -at this rate we may be able to return!

Has Liam really broke a ski? Did Elle B wipe out a piste sign? Does Stephen H keep crashing out? Has Mrs Olsen lost a ski pole? Did Tom A fall over doing a snow plough turn? Has Todd been wiped out by Mr F? Did Dan A's fringe get in the way? Do any of the instructors believe Beth and Alicia are twins? These and many more questions to be answered shortly.

On the learning front....

What is a glacier and what do they look like? Why don't the trees grow at this altitude? How do the snow sensors work and where are they placed. What is a pluviometre? Who were the Goitschel sisters? Where is Mont Blanc? Why do microwave dishes have to be in a direct line? Oh, yes then there is the learning that cannot be measured quite so easily, respect for each other, suppporting weaker members of the group and how to put accidents behind you and get back on your skis to prove you can do it!

Another great day finished off with some bum boarding - you just can't keep them off the snow.
